Without further ado, let’s get this started, with my review of Octodad: Dadliest Catch!

The full walkthrough bit will include game spoilers as I discuss everything from my first impression of the tutorial/title screen right down to the main motivations of the big villain. In the TLDR section I’ll just make short comments on specific aspects of the game, and provide something quick to read through. For now, I’ve decided on two major sections the TLDR (too long, didn’t read) scoring section, and the full walkthrough review. I’ve been trying to think of a format for these, and still keep it fluid/flexible for different games.

Well, here we are! First actual blog post for my game reviews series Dapper Reviews. If you’re open to some strangeness and creativity, however, Octodad may be quite the “catch” for you.The game Octodad: Dadliest Catch is owned and created by Young Horses Games and is available for purchase via the Steam store. If you like the sound of the game from reading my review please purchase the game to support some talented game devs spending every waking moment to keep us entertained! While its crazy scenarios and concepts will ramp up the amusement factor, the intentionally challenging controls can frustrate and even confuse players. Octodad: Dadliest Catch is very enjoyable and works perfectly with the PlayStation Vita. Looking at the amount of humor and creativity involved, it’s got a special charm that will get you progressing further with its strange premise. Still, the game works pretty well with the Vita when you’re playing on the go. The whole experience is pretty short, so it’s not going to really wow you in terms of content. Without giving away any spoilers, Dadliest Catch has plenty of things for players to go through. This opens the door for some hilarious circumstances when you’re taking your character through the game’s various scenes. There are an abundance of objects that can be knocked over, grabbed, or thrown. So when you have such tasks to perform, it becomes pretty challenging getting the limbs to do what you want them to. It should come as no surprise knowing that Octodad plays out with ragdoll physics. You’ll do various simple tasks like get past a guard without giving away your secret or just trying to get through a walkway without breaking nearby objects. Once it hits the maximum, it’s game over and you’ll need to start again. If you fumble around by knocking over items with your limbs, the meter will fill up. Specifically, there is a meter on screen that represents people’s suspicions. And the idea is that you want to ensure that you don’t give away the truth, which can happen when you fumble around. You take control of an octopus that is pretending to be human in front of people, including his human family.
Octodad: Dadliest Catch is fairly straightforward in terms of its objectives. Tack on the hilarious sound effects and you have yourself a laughing good time that doesn’t require a state-of-the-art presentation. It also fits well with the cartoon-like characters that opt for some wacky situations.Ĭomplementing quite effectively are the tracks playing in the background which gives a lighthearted feel that fits well with the game’s theme.
Nevertheless, the color palettes and details are just enough to make the overall appearance lively, especially on the Vita’s screen. Octodad: Dadliest Catch may look simplistic in terms of graphics. Either way, it will be a really wobbly “walk in the park.” However, others may appreciate the challenges that this game possesses. As such, some players may feel that the controls are absolutely horrendous. But that’s easier said than done since the limbs seem to be out of control. The whole idea is to move each of your character’s limbs using a combination of the shoulder buttons and analogue sticks. Patience and perseverance are the main qualities that you’ll need to have in order to get through this game. With such a peculiar concept, will these be the “catch” of the day? As wacky as it sounds, it has gotten me intrigued. An octopus pretending to be human? That seems to be the case in Octodad: Dadliest Catch, which has recently arrived for the PlayStation Vita. I’ve seen some weird things in my life, but this one takes the cake. She knows he’s an octopus, but those tentacles…
